Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The article is adapted to the Microsoft Word template provided by the journal.
  • I've read Editorial CSIC's Good Practice Code and comply with all its guidelines.
  • The Authorship, good publication practice and copyright transfer statement is filled and signed, and it'll be added to the submission.
  • I have consulted and applied the journal's Research data policy.
  • The article has not been previously published, and has not been sent to another journal for consideration.
  • The submission is an original work and does not violate the copy and reproduction rights of other authored works. If necessary, the author has written permit for the reproduced work and a copy will also be submited.
  • The person making the submission has been authorized by all the article authors to submit and act as their spokesperson in front of the journal during the review, editing and publishing processes.
  • The text adheres to the length, format, references, citation of figures, tables and equations (if applicable), and bibliography requirements outlined in the journal guidelines.
  • Each of the authors has been identified including the following data:
    - Given name (in full form) and family name(s).
    - Email contact address.
    - Country of professional activity.
    - Institutional affiliation.
    - Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier (ORCID).
    - Role/roles according to the CRediT taxonomy.

Trabajos de Prehistoria is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes work on the Prehistory and Protohistory of the Iberian Peninsula and its relations with Europe and the Mediterranean. On an exceptional basis works related to other geographical areas may be published just if they are of general interest due to their theoretical or methodological focus or their archaeological content is of comparative value. Only original contributions (previously unpublished or not pending publication elsewhere) will be published. These may be written in Spanish, English or French.

The journal covers subjects related to archaeological theory and methodology, archaeometry, bioarchaeology, palaeoanthropology and palaeoenviroments, and contains different sections: Articles, Reports, Book Reviews and Scientific Chronicle, Abstracts and Received Books. Since volume 51 (1994) Trabajos de Prehistoria has been published twice a year (June and December). On occasion and based on prior decision of the Editorial Board, monographic numbers may be issued. In such cases their contents will meet the publication norms and will receive the same treatment as other manuscripts received.

1. INTRODUCTION

Submissions for publishing in the Journal Trabajos de Prehistoria must follow the guidelines contained in this webpage. Those submissions that do not meet the requirements specified below will be rejected.

Only original works that have not been previously published and which have not been sent to other journals will be accepted.

The length of the manuscripts includes titles, abstracts, keywords, author names, affiliations, footnotes, legends, tables, figures and references. A full-page illustration (table or figure) is equivalent to 4.500 characters with spaces.

Contributions may be:

Articles: They are expected to present original research papers and should not exceed 90.000 characters with spaces. The format of the journal's template, which can be downloaded HERE, should be followed.

News: Recent advances in research projects, excavation and surveying campaigns, and new or significant findings. Maximum length will be 40.500 characters with spaces. The format of the journal's template, which can be downloaded HERE, should be followed.

In both cases supplementary material may be provided when its informative content makes it advisable. These files must be well laid out, understandable by themselves and contain the identification of the article to which they belong. Each file shall be named with the initials of Supplementary File and a consecutive number: SF1, SF2, etc. (initials without a full stop and without a space or hyphen before the number), followed by a clear and brief title. The text call will be SF1, SF2, etc.

CSIC Press uses the iThenticate software to detect instances of overlapping and similar text in submitted or published manuscripts. Trabajos de Prehistoria uses an external, "simple blind" evaluation system for the submitted originals, so that the referees remain anonymous. At the conclusion of each four-year editorial cycle, Trabajos de Prehistoria will publish an alphabetical list of those peer reviewers who consent to appear in it.

1.1. Page size and margins

The page size is A4 (21 × 29,7 cm). The upper, lower, right and left margins are set at 2 cm. The alignment of the page is vertical.

1.1.1. Letter font, paragraphs and footnotes

The format and font size recommended is Times New Roman 12 pt. Paragraphs should be left-aligned, without indentations and there should be no spaces between paragraphs. Double-space the lines.

Footnotes should be numbered consecutively in the order they appear throughout the paper.

2. TABLES AND FIGURES.

2.1. Tables and Figures

Figures and Tables should be in separate files from the text. The journal publishes articles with a large number of illustrations. Manuscripts are therefore requested to provide a link between the place where the author cites the illustrations and the place where the printer can insert them (always after the call in the text and consecutively). They should be numbered in Arabic numerals (Fig. 1: 3; Fig. 1A; Tab. 1). Tables combined with images or graphs will be considered figures for all purposes.

Illustrations should preferably be submitted in JPG or TIFF format (all of them stored in one ZIP or RAR compressed file), with a minimum quality of 300 dpi for colour or greyscale images, and 900-1200 dpi for black and white drawings. The representation of the scale, geographical north and sections of the materials in the figures and the typeface (Times or Times New Roman font) should be standardized and, as far as possible, the body of the text should also be standardized in the tables. It is advisable to use 10 pt.

The sites mentioned in the text should be mapped. Normalized maps of the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands and of the Canary Islands should be used.

2.1.1. Captions of illustrations

Captions must be presented in the language of the manuscript and must be submitted separately in a file with full identification data and author copyright.

In order to provide the reader with all the information needed to understand and contextualize tables and figures in the manuscript, it is suggested that the name of the site, its administrative location (in Spain, municipality, province), chronology, functionality in the case of sites and raw material in the case of materials be included. Where appropriate, the precise cartographic sources (printed or electronic) used in the preparation of the figures should be cited (see section Cartography and location of sites in the journal's style sheet).

When the illustration includes several photos or drawings, the common information should be given first. A numerical series will then identify the specific data for each component. The numbering criteria for the components of each figure should always be indicated (geographical: from north to south, from east to west; by date of appearance/publication; alphabetical by site name/TM...).

Abbreviations will be standardized (writing and typography) and explained in the caption. References to authors/institutions of drawings and photographs should be in brackets at the end of the sentence or caption.

2.1.2. Composition of figures and tables

All illustrations must be in full box (162 x 210 mm), half box, 1/3 box, or 2/3 box; or in columns (same series), according to the template provided.

Figures shall have a graphic scale or indication of geographical North in the case of maps/plans, and lettering of sufficient size to allow for reductions.

When several illustrations (e.g. Figs. 2 and 3) are cited together for the first time, they should, if the quality of reproduction permits, be composed as one larger illustration (e.g. Fig. 2A and 2B, or Fig. 2.1 and 2.2).

3. STYLE

The text should be written in a clear and simple syntax. The following rules should also be observed:

-Abbreviations: cm, g, ha, m a. s. l., m2, e. p.

-Years without punctuation: 1971.

-Scale 1:25.000

-Latinisms are italicized: et al., e. g., oppida, per se, in situ, ca.

-C14 dates (tables): accompanied by context reference, laboratory acronym, method, sample number, conventional BP date and standard deviation, material, δ13, 2ϭ calibrated date cal BC; calibrated dates should include the table or software used.

-Dates in the text, e.g. 4120 ± 100 BP (2850-2620 cal BC).

4. BIBLIOGRAPHY

Citations in the text will be made in the following way: surname/s of the author/s in lower case, without initial of the name, followed by coma, the year of publication, coma and p. page or pp. pages (in the case of specific citations), all in brackets. If there are three authors or more, et al. will be added to the surname of the first author. Examples: (Belén and Chapa, 1997), (Almagro, 1983, p. 12), (Fernández-Posse et al., 2008, pp.25-26). If several of these references coincide in the same year and first author, letters are used after the year (Pérez et al., 2020a, 2020b, 2020c). The order of these letters corresponds to their alphabetical place in the Bibliography. But several publications by the same author and year with different authors (Pérez and González, 2020; Pérez and Ruiz, 2020). When works by different authors are cited in the same parenthesis, they should be ordered by date and surname; for example: (Acosta, 1976; Abarquero, 2005; Arias, 2005). Citations of unpublished works are not accepted, except in two cases: a) texts in press with known precise editorial data at the time the citing manuscript goes to press; b) unpublished PhD theses and reports (grey literature) available in open access repositories. In press works with unknown editorial data at the time the citing manuscript goes to press and other unpublished works (PhD theses and reports) deposited in well identified public institutions but that need authorisation to be consulted will appear in a footnote.

In the final bibliography only works cited and only those in press (e.p.) with full editorial data or available in open access repositories will appear. When there are eight or more authors, cite the first six and the last one after ellipses.

DOI numbers (Digital Object Identifier) are mandatory for all cited documents that have this identifier. For references without a DOI number one can provide the URL address to facilitate the location of the document. The date of access in brackets should be added when this address is not stable.

Below are some examples of bibliographies according to the Harvard system:

No article will be considered for publication without submitting the Declaration of Authorship form (https://revistas.csic.es/public/copyright_transfer_statement_CSIC.pdf). In publications arising from research projects, this statement must also include the agreement of the Principal Investigator if s/he is not one of the signing authors.

The first page must present the title, abstract and key words in Spanish and English (also in French when the text is in that language); the complete name(s) of the author(s) with notes giving their institutional affiliation, ORCID identifier and e-mail addresses. The authors without the personal identifier must register in https://orcid.org to receive one.

The abstract (400 to 1200 characters, spaces included) should summarize the objectives, methodology, results and conclusions of the work presented. Key words should enable the identification of the article by topic, methodology, geographic location and chronology. Book reviews must include the complete bibliographic information of the work reviewed; the full name, institutional affiliation, ORCID identifier and e-mail addresses of the reviewer should be indicated at the end of the text.

Authors can download the Trabajos de Prehistoria Hoja de Estilo. This document serves to facilitate the publication instructing authors how to adjust their manuscripts to the journal’s formal requirements.

All sources of funding granted to the research, mentioning the private or public entities responsible for such financing, and the project title and code when it exists must be included after the Acknowledgements.

Authorship contribution statement: this journal applies the CRediT taxonomy for identifying authorship contributions based on the assignment of specific roles to research articles. For more information see "Submissions/Authorship identification". This information should be incorporated in the full version of the manuscript, under an "Authorship contribution statement" heading, located just before the bibliography, in the following format:

5. FILES PROCESSING

You should have the following files before you begin the submission:

- Article text with no graphical elements in Microsoft Word compatible file format.
- Article text with all graphical elements in PDF format.
- Declaration of Authorship form filled and signed.
- All tables, figures and illustrations in a single compressed ZIP or RAR file.
- Captions of illustrations with full identification data and author copyright.
- Reproduction rights contracts.

These files should be uploaded as different components of the article.

Book Reviews

For publications to be reviewed, two copies of the work must be sent to the journal: one for the reviewer and one to be incorporated into the Tomás Navarro Tomás (CCHS - CSIC) library. Exceptionally, based on the judgment of the Editorial Board, replies may be published, but in no case counter-replies.

Proofs and Free Copies

The correction of the first proofs by the author should be strictly limited to typographic errors and small mistakes, with the commitment of returning them in a maximum of fifteen (15) days from receipt. In the case of co-authored articles, proofs will be sent to the corresponding author.

How to register at Trabajos de Prehistoria

1.- On the journal's website, click on the link "Register":

 

2.- On the registration page you will have to fill in all the fields (the "Family name" field is optional, although highly recommended) using lower case only for your email, username and password. After reading the Privacy Statement you will need to consent to the collection and storage of your data and complete the Captcha. Receiving notifications of new publications and notices is optional.

 

3.- You will receive a message with a link to activate your account at the provided email address. Once activated, you will be able to log in to your account with the credentials you created.

 

How to send an original manuscript to Trabajos de Prehistoria

1.- On the magazine's website, log in by clicking on "Login":

 

2.- Enter your username and password. Once you return to the magazine's homepage, click on the "Make a Submission" button:

Before submitting, please review the "Submission Preparation Checklist" and read the "Author Guidelines", the "Copyright Notice" and the "Privacy Statement". When you have all the required documents ready, click on the link "Make a new submission".

In subsequent logins, you will be taken to your user dashboard. There press the ‘New Submission’ button to submit a new article. You will be shown any articles received and in process under the ‘My Queue’ tab):

 

3.- As you will see on the new submissions page, submitting a manuscript is a four-stage process, in addition to a final section with information on follow-up:

3.1.- "1. Start"

At this stage you must select the language in which the article is written and the section of the journal in which you think it would fit, you must indicate that you have prepared all the items on the "Submission requirements" list and, optionally, you may send comments to the editor. You must comply with the terms of the Copyright Statement and the collection and storage of your data as the author of the article in accordance with the Privacy Statement of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC).

Then press the "Save and continue" button.

 

3.2.- "2. Upload submission"

In this phase, the files that make up the article and its additional documentation will be uploaded to the management module.

There are three parts to upload each file. In the first one, we will select which component of the article we are going to contribute and we will upload the corresponding file. Once uploaded, click on the "Continue" button. In the second part we will see the file metadata, with the possibility to edit them, but we will click "Continue" without making this edition.

In the third part, select "Add Another File", going back to "1. Upload file" and, without modifying the default option "This is not a revision of an existing file", select the new "Article Component" identifying what it is and uploading the file. Click "Continue" until you reach, once again, step "3. Confirm". This process must be repeated until all the files have been sent, and only when all the material has been uploaded should the "Complete" button be selected.

If after "Completing" the submission we realise that we have forgotten to upload a file, we can do so by selecting the "Upload File" button located in the upper right-hand corner of the "2. Upload Submission" tab:

Once all the submission files have been uploaded, we will press the "Save and continue" button.

 

3.3.- "3. Enter Metadata"

In this phase the author will enter the metadata of the article according to the journal guidelines. These are:

- Title in Spanish and English. If the article is written in another language, it will be introduced first this language and then in English.

- Summary or abstract in the same languages as the previous item.

- List of contributors. Although it was not necessary when registering as a journal user, in this section it is compulsory for authors to have their ORCID identifier and affiliation correctly indicated. If necessary, the information of additional authors will be added using the link "Add contributor":

- Keywords. The article keywords will be inserted in both languages. The entire list cannot be copied, must be entered one term at a time pressing "Enter" after each one.

- Funding data. The entities that have supported the research published in the article must be indicated. After selecting "Add funder", the name of the funder should be inserted again, which will trigger an internal search that will return the institution standardised name and DOI. If the institution does not have a DOI, it will not be able to register in this field. After entering the grant numbers, click on "Save".

To finish this phase of entering metadata, click on the "Save and continue" button.

 

3.4.- "4. Confirmation" y "5. Next steps"

In this last phase we will confirm the submission metadata recording linked to the uploaded files. Before clicking on the "Finish Submission" button, we can go back to the previous phases and review the information and files provided to check that they are all correct.

Once we click on the "Finish Submission" button, the article will be sent to the journal and its staff will contact you to continue with the process, as indicated in the "5. Next Steps" section.

 

How to check a revision report and submit a revised version of a manuscript

Once your submission has been reviewed, the journal's staff will send you a review report. Once received, you must log in to the journal and, in the "Submissions" section of your dashboard, you will be able to check that your submission is in the Review phase and, if the editorial staff has requested, whether it is necessary to make any modifications or revisions to the manuscript:

By clicking on the title of your submission, you will be taken to the workflow of your submission and you will be able to check the information related to the its review. You will find the notifications that the editorial staff has sent you, the attachments that the reviewers may have attached and, if requested, the possibility to provide a new version of the manuscript with the requested modifications by clicking on the "Upload file" button:

 


Research data policy

We recommend authors depositing data obtained from the research developed for the preparation of their article in repositories of recognized prestige, specific to the discipline or of a generalist nature. In any case, it must be a FAIR repository (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), preferably in open access.

There are several repositories destined to conserve and disseminate concrete data such as results of surveys, observations, interviews, simulations, automatically collected data, samples, models ... If necessary, authors can consult the Registry of Research Data Repositories re3data taking into account that each repository has its own deposit rules.

Those CSIC authors who would like to deposit their datasets in Digital.CSIC may do so by following these guidelines. They can use the Servicio de Archivo Delegado made available by the Technical Office of DIGITAL.CSIC and the Red de Bibliotecas CSIC.

DIGITAL.CSIC generates DOIs for datasets and associated software and is certified as data repository in re3data and Repository Finder. More information at Política de datos en Digital.CSIC.

If the author has deposited datasets in a repository, he should mention it in the article providing a brief description of the type of data deposited, the name and URL of the repository, the identification code and the data of the license for use and distribution. This information must be included at the end of the article, immediately before the bibliographic listing, under the heading "Data availability".

Articles

Only original, research articles must be submitted to this Section. Should not exceed a maximum of 90000 characters with spaces, including notes, captions, tables and illustrations. Submissions to this Section will be peer-reviewed.

Reports

Preliminary reports on research projects, excavations, surveys and new and significant discoveries should be submitted to this Section. Maximum length should be of 45000 characters. Submissions to this Section will be peer-reviewed.

Privacy Statement

The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has a record of data processing activities. Data collected through this form will be incorporated and processed in the “Gestión de las actividades de producción y distribución de las publicaciones del CSIC” treatment activity of Editorial CSIC, in order to manage the requested service.
