Abstract

The cognitive aspects of past societies are receiving progressive attention in Archaeology. Phenomenological hermeneutics are being used as the philosophical basis for the study of history. I will try to show: a) why the Social Sciences are interested in those mental aspects of other societies, b) Why phenomenological hermeneutics are not adequate to analyze them; and c) the existence of different orders of rationality among cultures and the need to understand them if we want to analyze past behaviours.
