An ethnoarchaeological study of the exploitation of fluvial gold with traditional techniques along the Galician Sil river is presented here. The application of the model to prehistoric jewellery in the north-western lberian Peninsula allows for the possibility that all of it was made of gold, collected from the river basins using a simple technique that neent a limited investment of time and effort. Therefore the valne of the social ostentation of jewels in goldrich areas could be less than was traditionally believed.
