Abstract

In this article, based on the explicitly anthropological assumptions of American archaeology. the author outlines a critical sketch of the development of theoretical debate in Spain during the last twenty years. This debate was started by the more concerned Spanish archaeologists who tried to rethink their theoretical positions as a starting point for reorganising archaeology as a whole. They devoted special attention to such problems as: archaeology vs. prehistory; archaeology as antropology or history; normativism and historicism or particularism; cultural materialism vs. dialectical materialism; post-modern archaeology, etc.
