Phoenician amphorae from the fortress of Els Vilars d’Arbeca (les Garrigues, Lleida) in the Early Iberian Iron Age: contents and provenance

The beginning of interactions between the indigenous communities of the Iberian Peninsula and the Phoenicians from the 9th century BCE onwards, facilitated the exchange of ideas, technologies and goods. While these exchanges primarily impacted the coastal communities, the influence of the Phoenician world extended, albeit to a lesser extent, to inland regions. This study employs a multidisciplinary approach to analyze the remains of Phoenician amphorae recovered from the fortress of Els Vilars d’Arbeca (les Garrigues, Lleida). Through the use of petrographic analysis, portable X-ray fluorescence, and organic residue analysis, novel insights are presented on the origin and content of these amphorae, linking them to workshops in the region of Malaka (Málaga), an area that played a key role in the Mediterranean trade between the 6th and 5th centuries BCE. The main goal of this work is to enhance the comprehension of trade interactions between the southern and northern regions of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as between the interior and the northeastern coast.
