Abstract

The production of lithic projectiles throughout the Holocene reveals a wide variety of shapes, among which we will highlight the profusion of geometric projectiles from the late Mesolithic (circa 8600 cal BP in the Iberian Peninsula) to the Neolithic. Factors that may have influenced the development of these artefacts include adaptation to the socio-ecological context, cultural traditions, and mechanisms of cultural transmission ‒including the direction of transmission and any biases‒ underlying the different solutions, as well as the presence of different scenarios of social interaction. This study evaluates the variability in the relationship between lithic projectiles and faunal assemblages in a context of socio-ecological and economic change: the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition in the Mediterranean area of the Iberian Peninsula. To explore the effects of this transformation on the formation of more or less numerous and diverse geometric assemblages, we have analysed the evolution of their internal diversity. The degree of correlation between the faunal and artifactual records from both periods was quantified by applying a Mantel test. The results suggest a certain functional bias in the Mesolithic record, which is absent in the Neolithic.
