The ditched enclosure as a means of closure and symbolic spatial transformation in a Chalcolithic village. The evidence of El Casetón de la Era (Villalba de los Alcores, Valladolid)

The significance of prehistoric ditched enclosures remains a subject of debate. This paper addresses the case of El Casetón de la Era (Valladolid, Spain), where evidence has been uncovered of a Chalcolithic settlement associated with a triple-ditched enclosure. A multidisciplinary analysis of the site excludes the possibility that the ditches formed part of the original urban layout of the settlement. Instead, the archaeological record suggests that the ditches were excavated during the final stages of occupation, perhaps as a means of closure and transformation of the site into a symbolic space.
