Abstract

Processual archaeologists have been reluctant to address the nature of prehistoric property regimes. Ethnological evidence suggests a predictable development of such regimes over the evolutionary range of human societies. Examination of patterns of elite expenditure and household consumption can be used to evaluate such evolutionary scenarios in concrete cases.
